Community Events
In July 2022, EMC organised a successful community boat tour with 49 participants with diverse attendees ranging from fishermen to collaborators and families. The tour encompassed a scenic circumnavigation of Antigua aboard Wadadli Cats, offering participants panoramic views of the island's coastline and landmarks. Upon reaching Ten Pound Bay, participants could opt for a snorkel tour of the EMC nursery guided by the science team or a hike around Green Island led by EAG naturalists. As part of our Engagement initiative, EMC actively participates in community events such as local fayres, regional tournaments and church services. These events serve as valuable platforms for us to connect directly with the community. We use these opportunities not only to educate attendees about marine ecosystems and the critical work we do in marine conservation but also to inspire and empower individuals to take action in their own conservation efforts. By fostering this dialogue and sharing knowledge, we aim to cultivate a shared sense of responsibility and stewardship toward our marine ecosystems.
Lionfish Derby
In 2022, EMC co-hosted Antigua’s largest lionfish derby to date, collaborating with organiser and board members Martha Watkins-Gilkes and Steven Hoch, as well as a team from Lionfish University in the US. The event spanned four days and included optional training sessions, two days dedicated to hunting and catch weigh-ins, and a grand finale event day. Participants enjoyed a chef’s cookoff, a jewellery-making workshop, insightful educational speakers, and a prize-giving ceremony. The derby proved immensely successful, resulting in the removal of 864 lionfish from Antigua’s reefs by 36 skilled divers. Explore more about the Lionfish Derby here.
Community Boat Tour
We also host our annual event, ‘Making Waves,’ inviting all our members, donors, and the general public to attend. Our December 2023 event was a huge success, featuring live music from local musicians and a variety of delicious food and drink vendors on offer. The Kids' Craft Corner offered creative activities and face painting, making it a family-friendly affair. The highlight was an exciting ocean-themed raffle generously supported by local businesses and artists. With a remarkable turnout and the addition of 79 new members, the event surpassed our expectations, showcasing the incredible support and enthusiasm within our community.
