Into the Wild with the EAG

The EMC has worked closely with the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) and videographer Roddy Grimes-Graeme to produce a coral-focused episode for the “Into the Wild with the EAG” educational series. “Into the Wild with the EAG” was developed in 2020 by the EAG as a response to the inability to interact with students face-to-face because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In previous years, the EAG had implemented a successful, award-winning programme called the “Floating Classroom”. The premise of the Floating Classroom is one that embodies experiential learning as a means to expose children and teachers to the offshore islands and the wildlife that exists above and below the water. Check out previous episodes of the Into the Wild series here and see what you can learn about offshore islands, mangroves, and underwater environments!

Into the Wild - The Coral Code

Into the Wild with the EAG takes the premise of the Floating Classroom and scales it up with a combination of knowledge products:

  • Virtual classroom videos taking students on the adventures in the wild

  • Teachers Resource Guides that provide teachers with the learning objectives for each episode, additional information to assist with teaching, and activities and answer keys.

  • Student Activity Booklets that include fun activities that help to solidify the learnings from the videos.

This combination of products allows students to access information that they would not easily find in a textbook, and allows for local conservationists to provide students and teachers with their unique perspectives.

In 2024, EMC collaborated with EAG on another instalment of their Into the Wild series called ‘The Coral Code.’ This series focuses on coral ecology, highlighting the threats and benefits to coral reef ecosystems. With guidance from the Ministry of Education, our aim is to integrate the series as an educational resource within the first form curriculum of Secondary Schools. In addition to Teachers’ Resource Guides and Student Booklets, a three-part series on YouTube (found here) further reinforces and solidifies students' understanding. This significant collaboration emphasises local partnerships in marine conservation, while educating and inspiring students as stewards of coral reef ecosystems.
